A MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) is a type of scan or radiology technique that uses series of X rays or strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce very strong image of the inside of your body. It is used to examine brain and spinal cord, bones and joints, breasts, heart and blood vessels, liver, womb and prostate glands. This is a painless scanning and patients with metals implants or heart pacemakers cannot be scanned with it due to the magnetic effect.

A MRI scanner is a large tube surrounded by the powerful magnets. The patient is inserted in this magnetic tube with the help of moveable bed.  A strong magnetic field is produced by the magnets and the receiver portion of the scanner produced the images.

This technique is generally used after the other testing fails to provide accurate information about the patient’s problem. It is used to get accurate idea to confirm a patient’s diagnosis.  Some abnormalities like swelling and bleeding in brain, brain aneurysms, tumors of brains, stroke and inflammation of spine can only be confirmed by MRI scanning.

Neurosurgeons use Magnetic Resonance Imaging to evaluate the integrity of spinal cord after trauma, the structure of the heart and aorta and problem associated with the vertebrae or intervertebral discs of the spine.
